About the role:
We are seeking a motivated Agency Underwriter to provide fast, consistent, and disciplined underwriting support to the growing agency distribution channel. This role will play a key part in ensuring timely quotations, reliable service delivery, and strong underwriting governance for agency‑submitted risks.
Reporting to the Marketing & Business Development Manager, the Agency Underwriter will help improve conversion rates, strengthen partner confidence, and support controlled growth of the agency portfolio in line with CILF’s distribution and diversification strategy.
Key responsibilities:
Agency Risk Underwriting
- Assess and underwrite agency‑submitted risks in line with underwriting rules, referral thresholds, and internal guidelines.
- Deliver timely and clear underwriting decisions to support agency conversion.
- Monitor portfolio exposure and ensure adherence to risk appetite and quality standards.
Quotation & policy Support
- Provide accurate and timely quotations to agency partners.
- Support policy issuance, renewals, and endorsements alongside the Agency Coordinator and operations teams.
- Respond promptly to agency queries and provide technical underwriting guidance.
Portfolio Quality & Risk Control
- Apply underwriting standards consistently to protect portfolio quality.
- Identify and escalate emerging risks, trends, or exposures.
- Support initiatives to improve risk selection and reduce underwriting errors.
Agency Training & Capability Development
- Assist in training agency partners and internal teams on underwriting guidelines and processes.
- Provide technical support to build underwriting capability within the agency channel.
- Support onboarding workshops for new agency partners.
Operational Coordination & Reporting
- Coordinate with the Agency Coordinator and distribution teams to support training and capability building for agents.
- Collaborate with the Agency Coordinator to ensure smooth workflow and timely processing of agency submissions.
- Track underwriting turnaround times, referrals, and pending cases.
- Prepare reports on underwriting performance, conversion rates, and portfolio insights.

- Strong technical underwriting capability with high attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
- Ability to deliver timely underwriting decisions under competing priorities.
- Analytical thinker with the ability to interpret risk data and portfolio trends.
- Customer‑service orientation with a strong commitment to agency partner support.
- Able to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced environment while managing multiple priorities.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in business, Finance, Risk Management, or a related field.
- 3–5 years’ underwriting experience, preferably in general insurance or agency distribution.
- Strong understanding of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and portfolio management.
- Experience handling retail, SME, or agency‑submitted insurance risks.
- Knowledge of insurance products, regulatory requirements, and claims exposure.
- ANZIIF certification (or progress toward certification) is an advantage.
- Proficiency in MS Office and insurance policy administration systems.
