About the role:
We are looking for a Legal Officer to join our Legal team. Reporting to the Senior Legal Officer, the Legal Officer plays a key role in delivering legal support across CIG. Responsibilities include advising on legal matters, overseeing contract management, working with external solicitors on litigation, and ensuring regulatory compliance. This role contributes to the effective operation of the Legal Team and the overall risk management of the organization.
Key responsibilities, but not limited to:
- Provide legal advice and guidance on insurance regulations, employment law, workers’ compensation, and other legal matters.
- Interpret statutory provisions and contractual clauses to support internal stakeholders.
- Identify legal risks in complex matters and provide practical solutions.
- Ensure compliance with statutory and regulatory requirements across CIG’s jurisdictions.
- Stay updated on relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts with clients, vendors, and partners to safeguard CIG’s interests.
- Provide legal advice on contract terms, obligations, and risks.
- Coordinate with the internal teams and external counsel to manage litigation or Alternative Dispute Resolution matters involving CIG and its subsidiaries ensuring alignment with CIG’s interests.
- Oversee the preparation and review of case documents, including pleadings, evidence, and legal submissions.
- Monitor the progress of cases, ensuring timely action and compliance with procedural deadlines.
- Maintain records of all litigation matters and report key developments to management.
- Analyse litigation trends and provide recommendations to mitigate legal risks
- Liaise with regulators and legislative bodies in PNG, Solomon Islands, Fiji, Vanuatu, and Tonga.
- Edit written communications to ensure clarity, accuracy, and compliance with legal standards.
- Provide consistent reporting on legal matters and recommend improvements where necessary.

- Strong drafting, negotiation and analytical skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities
- Able to work with minimal supervision
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.
- Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks under strict deadlines
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in law
- 4 -5 years of legal experience with a focus on insurance law, contract law, company law and civil litigation.
- Bar Admission Certificate
- Current Practicing Certificate
