About the role:

We are seeking a dedicated Medical Underwriter to deliver disciplined and consistent underwriting across Medical, Term Life, and MPI portfolios. This role is essential in ensuring sustainable portfolio growth, protecting against adverse selection, and supporting brokers, partners, and corporate clients with timely and accurate decisions. Reporting to the Manager – Life & Medical, the Medical Underwriter will support renewal defence for key accounts, maintain pricing discipline, and strengthen the specialist underwriting function as the portfolio continues to grow

Key responsibilities:

Risk Assessment & Decision-Making
  • Conduct disciplined risk assessment for Medical, Term Life, and MPI submissions, reviewing medical reports, claims history, financial information, and other supporting documents.
  • Make underwriting decisions within delegated authority and document decisions accurately in line with underwriting guidelines.
Broker & Partner Support
  • Support renewal defence and broker negotiations for group schemes and key accounts.
  • Provide guidance to brokers and partners on underwriting requirements and respond to queries professionally and promptly.
Portfolio Sustainability & Monitoring
  • Maintain turnaround times to ensure service reliability and consistent decision‑
  • Monitor emerging claims trends and identify potential adverse selection issues for escalation.
Compliance & Documentation
  • Ensure underwriting decisions comply with internal policies, regulatory requirements, and confidentiality standards.
  • Manage new business, renewals, endorsements, and documentation in accordance with portfolio sustainability goals.
Teamwork & Technical Development
  • Work collaboratively with internal teams including Sales, Claims, Direct Underwriting, and Customer Service.
  • Contribute to strengthening technical capability within the Medical & Life underwriting function.

About You

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret medical, financial, and risk-related documents accurately
  • High attention to detail and disciplined approach to assessment and documentation.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage professionally with brokers, partners, and internal teams.
  • Ability to work independently and manage competing priorities in a fast‑growing portfolio.
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, underwriting manuals, and emerging health trends is an advantage.

Qualifications and Experience

  • University Certification in Business Administration, Finance, Insurance, Medical Science or a related field.
  • 3-5 years of experience in life and/or health insurance underwriting.
  • ANZIIF certification or progress towards certification is desirable.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications and willingness to learn underwriting systems.
