About the role:

We are seeking a dedicated Senior Underwriter (Broker) to evaluate, price, and underwrite complex and high‑value risks submitted through broker channels. The role requires strong technical underwriting capability, a deep understanding of broker distribution, and the ability to maintain underwriting discipline while driving profitable portfolio performance.

Reporting to the Head of Property & Casualty, this role plays a critical part in supporting broker relationships, ensuring service excellence, and contributing to the growth and sustainability of the broker portfolio.

Key responsibilities:

Underwriting and Risk Assessment
  • Evaluate and underwrite complex and non‑standard risks in line with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.
  • Analyze exposures, loss history, and coverage requirements to recommend appropriate pricing and terms.

Broker Relationship Management

  • Build and maintain strong, trust‑based relationships with brokers to support growth and retention.
  • Serve as the primary underwriting contact, providing technical guidance and timely responses.
Portfolio Management
  • Monitor performance of the broker portfolio, identifying trends, emerging risks, and improvement opportunities.
  • Contribute to underwriting strategies and collaborate with actuarial, claims, and product teams.
Compliance & Governance
  • Ensure underwriting decisions adhere to regulations, policies, and internal risk frameworks.
  • Maintain accurate and complete underwriting documentation and participate in audits.
Product Development & Market Insight
  • Provide market‑driven insights to support product enhancements and pricing reviews.
  • Keep informed about competitor activity and industry trends affecting broker distribution.
Mentoring & Leadership
  • Provide coaching and technical support to junior underwriters and underwriting assistants.
  • Contribute to training initiatives and knowledge sharing within the team.

About You

  • Strong technical underwriting skills with the ability to assess complex risks accurately.
  • Excellent relationship‑building and negotiation skills, especially with brokers.
  • Strong analytical and decision‑making capability with a disciplined, compliance‑focused approach.
  • High level of professionalism, communication skills, and stakeholder engagement.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum 3-5 years in underwriting, risk assessment or portfolio management.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Insurance, Finance, Business, or related field preferred.
  • Minimum 5–7 years in commercial underwriting, with at least 2 years in a senior or broker‑facing capacity.
  • ANZIIF Senior Associate or equivalent qualification is an advantage.
  • Proficiency in underwriting systems, policy administration platforms, and MS Office.
