This week we feature Joshua Nathaniel – our talented vocalist, recent graduate and trainee risk engineer. We hope you are inspired by Joshua’s journey at Capital.
When did you start and what is one thing you know about Capital?
I joined recently in June 2020 and I am 6 months into my first job and employment with Capital Insurance Group. I just graduated with a Bachelor in Building (Construction Management) at the PNG University of Technology and currently serve as Trainee Risk Engineer.
One thing I know about CIG is, it is one of the largest insurance groups in the South Pacific that work with small, medium, and large businesses by providing general insurance and life Insurance.
What changes have you seen within CIG since you joined?
As I am relatively new to the workforce and CIG, I appreciate the benefits of being an employee here. As far as changes go, I have seen the benefits of current programs and systems that CIG continue to implement and improve. Benefits such as continuous training programs that range from soft skills to technical skills. These trainings equip and enable us to be well informed about our business. We enjoy team bonding activities as well which creates a warm atmosphere that allows the team to be open, share ideas and work together and to top it off, the advancement of our IT systems in terms of Cloud Storage, development of software applications (such as the new property survey application), business applications and the installation of the CLIC Performance Dashboard.
What are some ways that you are doing to contribute to this change?
To contribute to these changes and fully enjoy the benefit of it, I focus on small but meaningful ways like maintaining my professionalism in my dressing code and ways of communication. I also believe in bringing a positive attitude to work to help me work better with my peers team, brokers, and clients.
I am also assisting our IT team with continuous updates for our property survey application by identifying areas that need improvement and relaying that to our IT team to further configure.
Why do you think insurance is important?
Insurance is crucial financial protection and assistance for businesses and people that helps them recover from losses due to accidents, emergencies, natural disasters, and other hazards.
How do you balance your career and family?
When it comes to work, I like to stay focus on an assigned task and give my best to get it done. When it’s family time I do everything to enjoy every moment with family like going for family outings/picnics, swimming at the ocean or river, church fellowships every Saturday, sporting activities, helping out with home chores, or household maintenance and cleaning around the home.
Any random facts/hobbies you could share with us (anything fun away from work)?
As a child, I grew up watching a variety of Christian music video tapes and would sing along with my favorite songs. I would use a power cable with a plug as my pretend microphone and imitating my favorite singers whilst standing on the deep freezer or on a table at home. It’s ridiculous but I had a lot of fun.
I enjoyed my singing experiences and all of them are in church. During University days I got involved in Seventh Day Adventist student’s association choir and other peer singing groups. The best singing times I had were the duets I did in my final year with one of my best buddies, Soso, who is a talented guitarist.
After completing school and coming to Port Moresby in search of a job opportunity in 2019, I saw the Digicel Stars audition and decided to give a go. I made it through the pre-audition and was selected for the first live audition on EMTV which was judged by some of PNG’s great artists/musicians such as AK47 and Anslom Nakikus. Unfortunately, I was not lucky enough and did not make it through but hoping to give another try if opportunity presents itself.
Do you have a favorite quote, motto or mantra?
In working towards a goal in life I always tread upon the famous quote of William Clement Stone, “Whatever the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.” In every endeavor I choose to go by the words of the wisest king who ever lived, “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches, and honor, and life.” Proverbs 22:4
Is there any particular product or services you want customers to be aware off?
At CIG, we carry out property risk surveys to properly analyze the risks that are present and provide risk improvement recommendations for our client’s property. We aim to help our clients not only by insurance covers but by better managing their risks and minimizing the possibilities of a loss happening. Therefore property risk survey is important for all property owners whether it is a small, medium, or large risk and we have the right team and resources in place to help.
