About The Role
We are seeking a skilled and analytical Senior Medical & Life Underwriter with a strong background in medical risk assessment and life insurance policies. This role is critical to ensuring the sustainability, profitability and quality of our life and health insurance portfolio.
Based in our Suva office in Fiji, you will evaluate insurance applications, collaborate with medical professionals, brokers, and agents, and drive strategic underwriting objectives. This is a high-impact position that offers cross-functional collaboration and exposure to both local and regional operations.
Key Responsibilities Include
- Evaluate applications for medical, term life, and group life insurance, including medical histories and supporting documents.
- Assess risk factors to determine appropriate coverage, exclusions, and premium rates.
- Liaise with brokers, agents, and medical professionals to gather relevant information and provide timely decisions.
- Work closely with claims, actuarial, and sales teams to ensure seamless underwriting and policy servicing.
- Clarify underwriting appetite in line with reinsurance requirements and licensing boundaries.
- Ensure underwriting practices comply with regulatory standards and internal governance frameworks.
- Maintain accurate and confidential records of underwriting decisions.
- Stay informed on emerging medical conditions, treatments, and insurance market trends.
Qualifications & Experience
- A tertiary qualification in Finance, Insurance, Medical Science, Health Sciences, or a related field (preferred)
- Insurance certification such as ANZIIF or equivalent is an advantage.
- At least 3 years of experience in medical and life underwriting within the insurance industry.
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, insurance products, and risk assessment practices.
- Proven ability to make sound, well-reasoned underwriting decisions.
- Excellent communication skills to confidently engage with clients, brokers, agents, and internal teams.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with underwriting systems and tools.
